The Movie List

So, here it is. My infamous movie list in its full glory.

The idea for this list came to me a few days before I graduated from high school. I wanted to compile a list of great movies. A movie can be "listworthy" for many reasons: directorial quality, acting, screenplay, cinematography, music, camera work, special effects, tone, comic relief, set design, or just that unquantifiable feeling you get when you watch a good movie.

Sometimes I know a movie is listworthy the moment I see it (Million Dollar Baby). Sometimes it takes me a few months to mull it over (The Polar Express). The point is that there is no mathematical rubric for getting on the list. I will say, however, that a film's ability to put me in a foreign space and allow me to remember that space--its texture, lighting, mood, weather--and also remember the characters that emobody that space makes it more likely to be listworthy.

You will find dramas, comedies, animated films, art films, musicals and foreign films on here. I have not ranked the films because it would be too arbitrary considering the wide range of movies on the list. Feel free to add on to the list (or tell me why something should be taken off the list) by commenting.

Your list is impressive for sheer its size, but is so big as to be unmanageable. I think I would recommend ratcheting up the standards a bit. The inclusion of quite a few of these movies made me raise my eyebrows. Sure, movies like Rob Roy and Training Day are okay to pass the time, but do they belong on any list with Citizen Kane and Apocalypse Now? To name a few things I noticed...

Your list has some seeming inconsistencies:
I Heart Huckabees but not Three Kings
Kill Bill: Volume One but not Volume Two
Lord of the Rings installments I and II but not III
Game of Death but not Enter the Dragon
Spartacus but not Gladiator
Gosford Park but not Short Cuts
Being John Malkovich but not Adaptation
Millions and Trainspotting but not 28 Days Later
The Hustler but not The Color of Money
Sunshine State but not Lone Star
Run Lola Run but not The Princess and the Warrior
A River Runs Through it but not All the Pretty Horses

And some things you should just be ashamed of:
Weekend at Bernie’s but not The Hours
Revenge of the Nerds but not Traffic
The Professional but not Beautiful Girls
Kalifornia but not True Romance
The Natural but not Eight Men Out

And for god’s sake, no:
Summer of Sam?
Stand By Me?
Swingers?
Bram Stoker’s Dracula?
Rounders?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?

In terms of the list being too long, I don’t see this as a greatest movies of all time list. If I wanted to ratchet up the standards, I would do so if I were to narrow down the list to the “Top 50” and rank them. This is more of a journal, an on-going list of movies that affect me somehow.

Regarding the movies you mentioned:

Three Kings – just didn’t do it for me. The whole searching for treasure thing and then helping the “natives” wasn’t my thing.

Kill Bill: Volume Two – I noticed this right away. Duly Noted. In fact, I liked Volume Two better than the first.

Lord of the Rings – I might actually remove all three of these movies because the way in which they were marketed and released really affected my perception of them. A good story is one thing, but I don’t like being raped at the box office and then force-fed a 16 hour DVD two weeks later . . .

Enter the Dragon – Gross oversight on my part.

Gladiator – What can I say, it sucked.

Short Cuts – Yet to see it, so no comment.

Adaptation – Saw it, forgot to put it on the list.

28 Days Later – second half of the film wrecked the entire film. It dragged on and on. It could have been a contender.

The Color of Money, Lone Star, The Princess and the Warrior, All the Pretty Horses, Beautiful Girls, True Romance, Eight Men Out – yet to see them. Got a copy I can watch?

The Hours, Traffic, Stand By Me, Swingers – forgot to put it on there.

Rounders, Summer of Sam – I’ll have to see them again, but not on the list yet.

Dracula, Eternal Sunshine – didn’t see them yet.

Still three words haunt me:
Weekend at Bernie's

Anyway, does a studio's marketing of films (LOTR) really diminish their quality? I should admit I can sympathize. I refused to see Grosse Point Blank for years because of its aggressive marketing campaign. When I saw it I liked it a lot though. (Is it on your list? I forget.) Anyway, it's hard for me to accept that you would really omit those majestic movies from your list while something like Quills stays on. If that is the case, I'm afraid I can't wrap my head around this list of yours.

As for the ones you haven't seen, I only have a copy of Beautiful Girls (one of my all-time favorites) you're welcome to borrow. but I'll warn you: it's middle-of-the-road white guy angst. Directed by the late great Ted Demme. Honestly, all the ones I mentioned are things you should check out. Much better in my opinion than something like Gladiator, which I only mentioned because it's the same movie as Spartacus, which made your list.

Color of Money, by the way, may be the only Scorsese movie not on your list, so you ought to feel pretty compelled to see it. If you like the Hustler and Hud, it's up your alley anyway.

Also, True Romance is absolutely historic and demands to be seen. Not only does it mark Quentin Tarantino's major studio screenwriting debut, but the cast is ridiculous: Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, Val Kilmer, Samuel L. Jackson, James Gandolfini, Michael Rapaport, and a gem of a performance by Brad Pitt. There's even a deleted scene with Jack Black!

As for Bram Stoker's Dracula (directed by FF Coppola), I just don't think I've ever met anyone who didn't like it. So it's a pretty safe bet you'd enjoy it.

One more thing: if I didn't make my opinion clear, Kalifornia, The Professional, and The Natural all SUCK. To me they were your most glaring inclusions.

man, Rocky 1 and 2, but not Rocky 3? How do you leave out the film that made the term "eye of the tiger" a part of our everyday vocabulary. Not to mention the fact Mr. T was in that movie.

I probably haven't seen 90% of the movies on this list though. I'm surprised there's not Garden State on there though.

I stopped looking after realizing the list doesn't contain Debbie Does Dallas or Dirty Debutantes 3.

armen,

those movies are missing from the list because i haven't seen them ... at least not in their entirety.
